Ep #32 - Hoser Horror: The Origin of Canuxploitation with Paul Corupe
In the mid to late-nineties, exploitation films were just about the least respected form of Canadian cinema that existed. Despite an explosion of interest in independent Canadian films, horror and exploitation movies were still all but ignored. It’s hard to believe, but even titans of the genre, like Black Christmas, were just not being discussed in any serious terms. All that changed around 1999, when writer and zine-maker Paul Corupe launched his website Canuxploitation–changing how we think about and discuss Canadian genre films forever.
This week on a very special episode of Hoser Horror, Paul joins us to discuss his history as a movie fan, how he became interested in Canadian cult movies and what exactly led him to create his website back in the late-nineties. Paul talks about digging in the VHS crates of Honest Ed’s, the original Canuxploitation cover story in Broken Pencil magazine, the fascinating story of the elusive Emmeritus Productions, and even why some Canadian genre movies have a blueish tint to them.
Lately, Paul has been creating a series of videos about classic Canuxploitation movies for Rue Morgue’s YouTube Channel - don’t forget to check those out today!
